This 3-day water fast online course is a convenient way to access distance coaching. If you already have a little experience, there are plenty of additional tips to help you go deeper into water fasting.

Of all fasts, the 3-day water fast is in many ways the most important. Three days is the period your body needs to unlock your healing metabolism and begin reaping the benefits. These three days are also the stepping stone required to move on to even longer fasts (such as the 7-10 day water fast and more prolonged fasts), in which the deepest healing can occur. The more you practise the three-day fast, the easier you’ll find water fasting of any length.

I’ll be honest with you, though. In the beginning, the 3 day water fast is also often the hardest.

What are the challenges and benefits of a 3-day water fast?

Because of this, it’s important do everything you can do to maximise your chances of a smooth experience. This can include following a well laid-out plan, such as that found in this Online Course.

  1. Would a 3 day fast make stomach issues worse if I just a endoscopy and I have erosive gastritis and an ulcer. I’m hoping that’s all because he was talking about doing a CT scan which I haven’t done. Do you think with all my stomach issues a 3 day fast would help or hurt? Thank you!

      Hi Laura,
Thanks for writing. In general, water fasting is going to help people with stomach issues. However, acid build-up is always a potential problem to navigate – especially on longer fasts. (This isn’t covered in the online course because it tends to hit only towards the end of the first week.) If you’ve just had an endoscopy, it would make sense to wait a bit before fasting, in order to allow any internal aggravation from the procedure to settle. The odds are that a 3-day fast will help by giving you a break from secreting stomach acid – but it will be important to monitor yourself while fasting, in order to catch any unlikely possibility that your ulcer actually feels worse.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis

  2. Hi Tallis,

Thanks for sharing your work so generously. As I write this, I am in hour 62 of a planned 3-day water fast (which may go an extra day if I feel up to it). I’m in a trough of aches and low energy, which you’ve explained is common at this point. Reading your articles gives me inspiration to be okay with the discomfort. (Reminds me of my vipassana course– “anicca- all is fleeting!”)

I wanted to ask about black coffee. It seems the opinion is split about 50/50 from the sources I’ve watched online. I drink my ritual 16 oz. (half decaf) every morning, including during fasting. (Although honestly, I haven’t enjoyed it on this third day!) What’s your take on drinking coffee during a water fast? I’ve also made a tea from herbs in my garden (nettle, lavender, blackberry leaves) and enjoyed that on the fast.

Also, I would love to feature your site/products on my own website (fermentersclub.com/austin-recommends) as part of my “Austin Recommends” section. Nothing needed on your part, I would just link to your site. I just love sharing about and showcasing products and services that contribute to our overall health! Please let me know if that’s okay with you.

    Thank you!
    Austin

      Hi Austin,
Thanks for writing, and congratulations on your current fast! Yes, all is fleeting, and it does get easier with more you continue to fast :-).

About black coffee: this is a huge problem because of misinformation on the internet! A couple of well-known figures – who have experience with weight loss and intermittent fasting but little knowledge of extended fasting – have promoted the idea of drinking coffee during a fast in order to reduce hunger. However, repeated coffee drinking on longer fasts almost always leads to serious issues. First, the caffeine may reduce hunger over the short term, but the acids in the coffee exacerbate it over the longer term. Second, the acids irritate the intestinal lining and can also cause acid reflux. Third, the acids only add to the overall acidic load of detox. Fourth, the caffeine mitigates the healing potential of the fast because it speeds up the metabolism when instead it should be slowing down. It’s clear: don’t drink coffee while fasting. (And just so you know, I’m not against coffee per se – I love drinking it in everyday life.)

Many thanks for linking to my website – I really appreciate it 🙂

      All the best,
      Tallis

  3. Hi Dr. Tallis, how long of a water fast do you think would be needed to reverse High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure and High Triglycerides? I just came across your website and would like to know if normalizing these is even possible with a water fast? Thank you for your time and guidance in advance.

      Hi Iris,
Thanks for writing. All three issues you mention respond extremely well to water fasting, so you should be very optimistic about returning to a normal reference range. In terms of the length of the fast, it depends mostly on (1) how severe the issues are and (2) whether you intend to use one main fast only or a series of shorter fasts.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis
