  1. Hi Dr Tallis, I was recently diagnosed with Thymoma stage 4 cancer along with this auto-immune condition called myasthenia gravis so a whole lot of fun recently. I was told surgery was too difficult due to the mets so was recommended to do CAP chemo protocol. I DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS. But as I’ve got a young child, will do whatever I have to do but was hoping I could try to do a water fast to help reduce any cancer cells/mass. My oncologist said he would give me a PET scan in a month so I was hoping to do this fast in the next few weeks. 1) Do you offer tele-coaching? 2) I’ve already lost 30 lbs as I was on a feeding tube for a week while the doctors were trying to figure out why I had difficulty swallowing so am already the thinnest I’ve been in my life. Should I gain healthy weight first before doing a long fast? 3) Lastly, while i’m sure results vary, do you think I should get the PET scan immediately after the fast or a week or two after to really see the impact of fasting on my body? Thanks for your important work and time doc! Cy

      Hi Cy,
I’m really sorry not to have seen this before now. I’ve been in the middle of moving house this month, and your comment fell in between the cracks. In advanced cases of cancer it’s not always possible to aim for a long fast, but when I’m working with online clients (tele-coaching) there’s always a way forward. It’s just a question of adapting the fasting protocol to your particular circumstances. To answer your question, I don’t think you should try to put on weight before fasting, because this is likely to involve a diet which will only aggravate the cancer. This is clearly a complex case, and it would be necessary to set up a consultation to discuss how to move forward safely and effectively. If it’s not too late, you can reach me via the contact form on the coaching page here:

  2. Hello Tallis,

Does it help with possible renal cell carcinoma and cataract?
    Ct scan shows mass of 4cm x 4.5cm x 3cm.
    GP says 90% likelihood.
    No urologist opinion yet.
My eyesight has become quit bad recently in general.
Diet not good for a long time now with other health issues as well.

You must be aware of the mucoid plaque in the digestive tract thats causing all of these heath issues.

      Hi Peter,
Thanks for sharing. Extended fasting can definitely help with both cataract and cancer, and I’ve worked with numerous clients suffering from both these issues. However, because your own cancer concerns the kidney, you would need to be extremely careful given that the kidney is one of your main organs of detox, and would therefore experience increased stress during the fast. This isn’t to say you can’t fast. In fact, I’ve worked successful with clients who have had highly impaired kidney function before their own fasts. But I would definitely recommend that you seek advice from an expert like myself about how to proceed safely, and not attempt this on your own!
      All the best,
      Tallis

      1. I will be in contact very shortly.
        Thanks.

  3. The post I am replying to is in regard to whether or not Tallis’ fee can be paid for with a Health Savings Account (HSA)… Maybe you have already determined this since that post a few months ago, and I am no expert, but my understanding is that you can go ahead and pay for it that way, and on the off chance that you were ever to be audited on your general return, if the auditor raises that question, you will just need to argue your case. In my opinion, there is no way that someone could deny that this is a bona fide expenditure on your health and well-being… Cheers!

      Hi Danno,
Thanks for sharing and giving your input. I’m afraid I’m physically and financially based in the UK, and so I’m not familiar with the specifics of how HSA works!

  4. Is it possible to heal your gall bladder with fasting? It seems that doctors are always quick to try and have it removed when I believe your body can heal itself

    1. Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip. Avatar
      Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip.

      Hi Matt,
Thanks for writing, and apologies for the slow response.
It’s certainly possible to heal your gallbladder with fasting – but I wonder whether the issue has less to do with your gallbladder and more to do with your liver… Yes, many doctors naively assume the gallbladder has no function, despite the fact that the body isn’t likely to waste energy producing needless organs! The gallbladder certainly does have a crucial function: to regulate the flow of bile into the GI tract. Without a gallbladder you lose this function, and, with regard to fasting, this can complicate matters significantly.

Most of the time doctors decide to remove the gallbladder when there are issues with gallstones. The problem here isn’t caused by the gallbladder but rather the liver, which creates the gallstones in the first place: usually as a result of excessive toxicity. As always, the solution is to treat the cause – and not merely the symptoms – and this is where water fasting can elicit a profound healing.

      Hope this helps,
      Tallis

  5. Hi, I’ve water fasted 3/4 times for 7-10 days but vomit constantly after the first day and have terrible acid reflux. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to alleviate this

      Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip.

      Hi Elisabeth,
Thanks for writing. Sorry to hear you’re having such a rough time water fasting! There are many possible causes for nausea and vomiting, and in order to find a solution we would need to look at the context: both while fasting as well as in everyday life (ie take a look at your case history). In establishing what the cause is, we should be able to find a solution which reduces or ideally eliminates the vomiting. I suspect the acid reflux relates to the nausea, but, in order to understand what’s going on, we’d also need to take a look at how soon it develops during your fast, along with whether it involves any particular pattern or biorhythm.
If you’d like to set up a consultation to figure this all out, just send a contact form from this page.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis

      1. Hi Dr. Tallis,
Could your protocol help someone who is having seizures/spells with an unknown cause? Doctors have no answers as to the cause or how to stop it.

        1. Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip. Avatar
          Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip.

          Hi Kim,
Thanks for writing. I can’t really make guarantees for anything with an ‘unknown cause’, given that by definition we don’t know the dynamics of the situation. What I can tell you is that extended fasting can help other types of known seizures/spells, and historically was even used to heal epilepsy. In a consultation I would want to discuss your experiences further, in order to get a sense of how fasting might impact on your own symptoms. Given the unknown dynamics involved, it would make sense to proceed very carefully in any case.
          All the best,
          Tallis

  6. Man, I’m an amateur composer and I can say your music is great! I rarely get impressed. It has a healing power in itself and I guess it would be a great idea to listen to it during a water fast.

      Hi Becky,
Thanks for writing. No-one has ever asked me that before, and I’m guessing it depends on the specifics of your policy.
If I can help in any way, do let me know!

      1. I am assuming you would fall under the category of Holistic Healer, would that be correct?

        1. Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip. Avatar
          Dr. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip.

          Hi again Becky,
I’m not sure I’d describe myself as a healer – that has very different connotations! Also, when you’re fasting, YOU are the healer of your own body. But if you have to tick boxes, then holistic healing definitely fits the bill :-), especially given that water fasting is such a niche subject that it’s unlikely to have it’s own category on a form.
          Hope this helps,
          Tallis

          1. That’s what I was thinking too. I submitted a coaching request.😊

            Thanks!

  8. Hi Tallis! Have you ever helped someone with bladder inflammation? My main symptom is frequency right now and I’m wondering if a fast might help.

  9. Hi Tallis! Have you helped someone who has been damaged by SSRI’s and Benzo’s? Specially issues with PSSD? Thank you so much!

    1. Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip. Avatar
      Tallis Barker, D.Phil., Nat.Dip.

      Hi Joy,
Thanks for writing. I work with a lot of people who are currently taking or who are in the process of coming off of SSRI’s and benzodiapezines, and yes, PSSD is a common problem related to these drugs. The first issue is actually coming off of SSRIs and benzodiapezines, and it typically needs to take place very gently given the potential for serious physical detox symptoms and disruption to emotions. It’s possible to incorporate fasting into this process, but I would strongly advise against doing this alone, without expert advice. I would expect that fasting will also start to heal the PSSD, but the exact length/protocol is going to depend on the individual case.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis

      1. Thank you for your response, Tallis! Does the fasting help alleviate or lessen the severity of the tapering experience? And yes, my loved one will be using a program through a holistic doctor who has helped many safely taper off of SSRIs and Benzos. I am trying to find anything that can help his brain and whole body recover better than so many of these heart breaking horror stores of people who have suffered so much. I am talking to him about your site and maybe incorporating you to guide him through bouts of fasting through his tapering experience.

          Hi Joy,
You’re welcome! Yes, in principle fasting can and often does alleviate the withdrawal symptoms of coming off anti-depressants. However, I wouldn’t want to make any blanket statements here. When I’m working with a client, the actual tapering process has to be largely based on individual feedback on a day-by-day basis, and the pacing can vary tremendously!
          All the best,
          Tallis

          1. I just wanted to share that fasting was invaluable for me when I came off an anti-depressant. It was an SNRI came off…. I tapered over about 6 weeks. I suffered from terrible withdrawal effects for about 4 months…then I did a fast of 7 days and then 12 days within a period of a couple of months, and the withdrawal effects were gone by the end of it.

              Hi Anna,
Thanks for sharing. It’s great that fasting helped you to come off anti-depressants :-). Although some people manage it quite easily, others do find it extremely difficult, along with awful side effects (as you yourself mention). Either way, extended fasting often eases the process, but it’s always a good idea to be extremely careful when coming off prescription medication, especially if this takes place during the fast itself.
              All the best,
              Tallis

            2. Very interested to hear more of Anna’s story and others healing from psych med damage. Is this something you’ve helped people heal from completely?

  11. Ive read some places that you shouldnt water fast if you have gout. Is this true?

    1. Tallis Barker, D.Phil. Avatar
      Tallis Barker, D.Phil.

      Hi John,
Thanks for writing. I’m guessing that what you’ve read is based on someone’s theory and not practice. In other words, fasting raises uric acids levels due to detox and since gout is caused by crystallisation due to uric acid, the logical conclusion is that fasting should makes things worse. However, the clinical fact is that I’ve worked with numerous clients precisely in order to heal their gout.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis

  12. Hi, is water fast safe for people with hypothyroidism, pcos and hashimotos? Im considering doing a 21 day fast with coaching

    1. Tallis Barker, D.Phil. Avatar
      Tallis Barker, D.Phil.

      Hi Ama,
Thanks for writing. Water fasting is almost certainly safe for someone like you (of course, I can say more definitely after we’ve gone through the specific circumstances of your issues). One of the biggest challenges is negotiating any meds you might be on. It would also be good to know whether Hashimoto’s has been confirmed via antibodies to thyroid peroxidase (TPO), or whether it’s been loosely applied because of overall hypothyroid symptoms – because simple hypothyroidism (which often occurs as a response to adrenal stress) usually responds more quickly to fasting than true Hashimoto’s.
      Hope this helps,
      Tallis
